Symbiosis Law School [SLS]


Symbiosis Law School, Pune stands for excellence in legal education.It is nestled in the city of Pune, popularly described as the Oxford of the East, with the glorious heritage of being the capital of the Peshwas.

Symbiosis Law School (SLS), Pune, piloted and enriched by the vision of Padma Bhushan Dr. S.B. Mujumdar, was established in 1977 under the illustrious banner of Symbiosis Society. Since 2002, it has been a constituent of Symbiosis International University, which is accredited by ‘NAAC’ with ‘A’ grade. SLS, Pune has been ranked amongst the top 10 Law Schools in India by the India Today-Nielsen and The Week survey in 2013. It was conferred with the prestigious Gold Star Award by the Bar Council of India in February, 2013. This stature is attained through its various programmes including the five-year integrated Undergraduate Programmes like the Bachelor of Arts and the Bachelor of Laws – Honours* (B.A., LL.B – Hons*.) and the Bachelor of Business Administration and Bachelor of Laws – Honours* (B.B.A., LL.B – Hons*.). SLS, Pune is one of the pioneers in India to start the one year Master of Laws (LL.M.) Programme with emphasis on an inter-disciplinary approach with 6 specializations. SLS, Pune also successfully administers 16 different Diploma Programmes and 19 Certificate Programmes.

The curriculum and pedagogy are designed around the latest quality initiatives in legal education including recommendations of the Carnegie Report, USA combining skill, knowledge and values, which are imparted through multitalented, qualified, competent and enthusiastic faculty. Its efforts are reciprocated by the participation of all the stakeholders including the members of the Bar and Bench, corporate sector and international experts. Impressive international collaborations across UK, US and Europe have brought in the membership of International Association of Law Schools, USA and the Asian Law Institute, Singapore. SLS, Pune is the only Indian partner with the Erasmus Mundus global consortium of Law Schools. Since 2008, DAAD, Germany has been funding faculty and students of SLS Pune for research and exchange programmes through the ‘New Passage to India’ Programme with Leibniz University, Hanover and Brunswick European Law School, Ostfalia University of Applied Sciences, Wolfenbuttel, Germany. Since 2012, Symbiosis Law School, Pune has also been a part of Ontario Maharashtra Goa (OMG) Exchange Programme.

SLS, Pune endeavors to secure all-round contributions to the betterment of the field of Law, to create world class professionals, to produce committed academicians and law reformers, to train justice dispensers, to invigorate community crusaders and to create a strong watershed of new and upcoming expertise in law relating to business and corporate context.

Students can avail scholarships such as the SC/ST Top Class Education Scholarships and the Ministry of Social Welfare, Govt. of India, State Merit Scholarship. They obtain support, attention and motivation through the mentor system.

The following resources facilitate teaching-learning, co-curricular and extra-curricular activities in tune with the vision and mission of the Law School:

Library The Symbiosis Law School, Pune library is enriched with a vast collection of more than  50,000 books, 150 journals and 15 e-journals, numerous other periodicals and magazines and it is a prime source for legal research for both, the faculty as well as the students. Augmenting traditional print resources with expanding electronic sources, it also provides extensive technology based learning resources with 12 legal databases including Manupatra, SCC Online Web-edition, LexisNexis, Hein Online, Westlaw, JSTOR, EBSCO, Kluwer-Arbitration, Patents and Competition, Legal Sutra, World News Paper, Cambridge OnlineBooks, CLA, Taxmann and Index to Legal Periodicals.

Research & Publications: The institute strongly emphasizes research and publications through various research projects and law journals, which are being published in collaboration with Lexis Nexis where students contribute significantly.

Computer Lab: The Symbiosis Law School, Pune campus is Wi-Fi enabled. It has two state-of-the-art Computer Centers separate for UG and PG students. The Labs are fully equipped for wireless data transmission.

Other Facilities: All classrooms are equipped with LCD projectors and Wi-Fi connection. There is awell-equipped, air-conditioned auditorium-cum-moot court hall, with the seating capacity of 150. The multi-media conference hall has a seating capacity of 50 to conduct, interactive sessions.

Health Services and Health Insurance: The Health Center provides all emergency health services,covers the students under a unique and novel medical insurance scheme with a free and compulsory annual health checkup. There is a well-equipped and modern gymnasium available within the campus.

Canteen: The Multi-cuisine food court of the campus caters to a variety of preferences at a concessional rate.

Hostel: Limited hostel facility is available on campus based on merit. However, the institute will  provide detailed information on the accommodation available in the nearby areas.

Other Programs offered:

LL.B. [3-Year Programme]*: This Programme is available to students who have a graduate degree in any discipline.

Post-Graduate programmes in Law: A One-Year LL.M Programme with an interdisciplinary approach with 6 specializations and research orientation.

Diploma: There are 16 Part-time one year Diploma Programmes and 1 Post-Graduate Diploma Programme available as value-addition. Many students pursue these programmes alongside their Undergraduate or Postgraduate Programmes.

Certificate Programs: There are 19 Certificate Programmes, which include the much-acclaimed Certificate Programme in European Legal Studies and the Certificate Programme in Securities Laws among others.


The Placement Cell organizes the placement training throughout the year and during the programme via a systematic development plan. The students are trained, groomed and chiseled to be the best employee, with the combination of managerial and leadership skills and a broad range of professional skills such as legal reasoning skills, advocacy, legal services, legislation, law reforms and advisory. Despite recession, the Cell has managed to place students substantially in placement opportunities from various sectors including PSUs, Law Firms, Banking and Financial Companies, LPOs, Judiciary and Insurance.

Method of Instruction

The medium of instruction is English. The methods are essentially learner-centric, which include lectures, the Socratic method, field visits, seminars, group discussions, simulations, case studies, moots, mock trials and ICT-enabled learning by international guest faculty and guest sessions by the stalwarts in the field.

The institutional commitment of diversity and inclusion is reflected in the current student composition of the law school, which consists of 90 International students. Some of the best alumni profiles include some of our in-house faculty and those who have been admitted to top universities of the world such as Oxford University, Harvard Law School, New York University, London School of Economics and others. Career prospects:

After initial assessment through elaborate psychometric tests, assessment and screening process; the students get training, orientation and experiential learning through systematic internships in industry, High Courts, Supreme Court and Non-governmental organizations. A student can look forward to a meaningful and rewarding career with various options such as Judiciary, Corporate practice, Litigation, Law teaching, Legal Process Outsourcing, and Administrative services.


Qualification: The candidate should have passed XII (10+2) examination from any recognized Board with a minimum of 45% marks (40% for S.C. /S.T. candidates). Students who have appeared for their Standard XII final examination and are awaiting results are also eligible to apply, subject to submission of passing certificate at the time of the final admission.

Age Limit: Candidate should be less than  20 years of age  at the time of appearing for the SET as on May 3rd, 2014 (2 years relaxation for SC/ST candidates i.e. 22 years).


The total intake is 250 seats [Inclusive of 125  seats of B.B.A, LL.B (Hons.*) and 125 seats of B.A, LL.B (Hons.*)

** Separate Merit Lists for B.B.A, LL.B (Hons.*) and B.A, LL.B (Hons.*) programmes will be prepared and published. At the time of SET registration, it shall be mandatory for the candidates to clearly indicate the programme to which they wish to apply (i.e. only one out of the above-mentioned programmes). No request for change of Programme will be entertained at any stage.

Note: It is suggested that those candidates who have studied arts/social sciences subjects for their qualifying examination may apply for B.A, LL.B (Hons.*) programme. Similarly, those candidates who have studied commerce/accounts/mathematics may apply for B.B.A, LL.B (Hons.*) programme. The candidates are free to make their own choice depending on their ability, interest and opportunity. Please note that these two programmes differ only in the First Degree subject (either Humanities OR Business Law), whereas the same Law courses are offered to both the programmes. Graduates in both streams are eligible for diverse legal careers and opportunities including Corporate, Lawyering, Civil Services, Advocacy, Judiciary, Academic, International Organization Jobs, International Admissions and others.
